Description
Have you ever been shown the STRUCTURE of the NSW Mathematics K-6 Syllabus? Here’s how to simply see the ‘big ideas’ in the document for each substrand for each grade, rather than seeing pages and pages of endless content to teach.

Each page is organised using the following structure:

  • The Australian Curriculum CONTENT DESCRIPTIONS (and the code which I call the ‘number plates’) are flush to the left of the page. I like to think of these as the ‘big ideas’.
  • The first level of indentation, starting with a dot point, is the ‘KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS’ Ie how to teach the ‘big ideas’.
  • The second level of indentation, starting with an arrow, is the ‘WORKING MATHEMATICALLY processes Ie. what our classrooms look, sound and feel like.
  • The third level of indentation, starting with a dash, is the MENTAL STRATEGIES with examples of written recordings shown
  • The LANGUAGE section of each substrand K-6 includes a developmentally sequenced word list. Words appearing for the first time in the substrand are listed in bold type.

Tips for making your equipment classroom-friendly

  • I use these to store my SENA flash cards together as it keeps them in the order required for administering these one-to-one assessments.
  • It’s very handy when doing a SENA ‘on the run’ Ie. administering chunks of a SENA with several students around the room during the Practice part of a lesson.
  • I simply hole punch each card, then place them in order on a hinged ring.
  • The rings are easy to pull open and squeeze closed.
