Student Whiteboard Small Erasers | Anita recommends

Equipment
Whiteboard Sleeves

Focus Area

Resource Type

Year Level
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, Year 7

Tips for making your equipment classroom-friendly

  • A range of 4 bright colours, (4.5 x 7.3 x 2.0) cm.
  • How packaged: I keep my 30 erasers and 40 black student markers together in one container for quick and easy strategic distribution to students by myself as the teacher.
  • Where stored: On your designated maths resources shelf in your classroom.

Student small whiteboard erasers available from

  • Elizabeth Richards (Anita recommends): Pack of 10 for $16.45 ($1.65 each). Incl GST as at 23/11/2024.

STUDENT WHITEBOARD MARKER PENS | Elizabeth Richards | Anita Recommends

Equipment
Whiteboard Sleeves

Focus Area

Resource Type

Year Level
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, Year 7

Tips for making your equipment classroom-friendly

  • As the tiny white erasers at the end are not high quality, they damage the surface of whiteboard insert sleeves as they leave ink marks behind when you erase. Therefore, I remove them and purchase separate high-quality small student erasers.
  • How packaged: I keep my 40 black student markers and 30 student erasers together in one container for quick and easy strategic distribution to students by myself as the teacher.
  • Where stored: On your designated maths shelf in your classroom.

Student black whiteboard markers available from

  • Elizabeth Richards (Anita recommends): Each pen with lid measures 11 cm. $5.45 for a pack of 10 ($0.55 each). Incl GST as at 23/11/2024.
  • NOTE: These are designed to last for a short period of time (I love this idea because if students don’t put the lids on properly, the ink dries up, then you have to throw away the marker pen!).
  • As I use them 3–4 days a week for 3 lessons a day, they last about 7 weeks for me. So buy in bulk and stock up as I do!! As a guide, I recommend 5 per student for the school year.

  • Year 2 (Stage 1, Part 2), dot point 1 Working Mathematically (Communicating): use empty number lines and number charts to record repeated add
  • Year 4 (Stage 2, Part 2), dot point 3c: use mental strategies to build multiplication facts to at least 10 x 10 including using doubling and repeated doubling as a strategy to multiply by 2, 4 and 8 eg 7 x 8 is double 7, double again and then double again.

TASK IDEA | Domino Snakes to 12

Equipment
Dominoes

Focus Area
Addition & Subtraction

Resource Type

Year Level
Year 3

Activity Idea

  • Knowledge and skills developed: Students add three or more single-digit numbers
  • Knowledge and skills developed: Students model and apply the associative property of addition to aid mental computation,
  • Grouping: pairs
  • Instructions: Students create a ‘domino snake’ as shown in the photo. All sides of the snake must have 3 addends that make 12.
    eg. top horizontal side: 6 + 2 + 4 = 12
    eg. bottom vertical side: 5 + 5 + 2 = 12
  • Dominoes shown available from ORIGO Education. They are exceptionally durable. Each set of 55 dominoes is packaged in a classroom friendly box with a lid. Each domino is (50 x 100) mm. $23.95 (30/4/2022)

Year Level
Year 3

Activity Idea

  • Knowledge and skills developed: Students add three or more single-digit numbers
  • Knowledge and skills developed: Students model and apply the associative property of addition to aid mental computation.
  • Grouping: individual
  • Instructions: Students make a ‘domino train’ that has 3 carriages (3 dominoes) and 18 passengers (18 dots in total) as shown. Next, they draw their train. Then they write a number sentence to represent their train.
eg. (second train): 6 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 0 = 18. Lastly, they prove there are 18 passengers on their train by applying the associative property of addition (you can add numbers in any order) to aid mental computation and then record their thinking
    eg. 6 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 0 = 6 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 1 = 10 + 8 = 18
  • Whiteboard insert sheet shown can be downloaded from Anita’s printable ‘Addition and Subtraction Using Double-Nine Dot Dominoes‘.
  • Dominoes shown are from ORIGO Education. They are exceptionally durable. Each set of 55 dominoes is packaged in a classroom friendly box with a lid. Dominoes are (50 x 100) mm. $26.35 (14/4/2023)

Classroom-friendly equipment storage tips K-8

Welcome to my office! This is how I store all my whole-class sets of maths equipment that I use K-8.

  • I package most of my equipment in Fischer hinge-lid clear storage boxes (available from Howards Storage World) so that everything easily ‘stacks and packs’ in a small space.
  • More importantly, I can quickly find what I need as you can see through the clear containers.
  • My 5 by 5 cube shelving unit (182 x 182) cm is from Ikea! This ‘Kallax Shelving Unit’  comes in a range of different sizes and colours from Ikea (as at 1/3/20).
