  • Mathematics building blocks for numeracy is a suite of online professional learning modules by the NSW Department of Education (NSW DoE).
  • The modules provide PL around successful teaching practices and pedagogy based on current research. It is about pedagogy, not a teaching program.
  • The six modules support the NSW DoE numeracy initiatives:
    Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN) – adapted from CMIT as a K-2 intervention initiative;
    Count Me In Too Online (CMIT) – CMIT was created as a K-6 whole class initiative;
    Taking Off With Numeracy (TOWN) – adapted from CMIT as a Y3-8 intervention initiative.
    They are based on the Numeracy Continuum K-10 (NSW DET).
  • You can download the four SENA assessment schedules and resources from the Module Resources section of their website.

What are the characteristics of schools where students do well in mathematics? What strategies do teachers use to assess students’ progress and engage them in meaningful mathematical learning? Drawing on several recent research studies, this presentation will focus on what schools do to support mathematics learning and how they achieve their goals.Presenter: Adjunct Associate Professor Rosemary Callingham, University of Tasmania.
As a classroom teacher and a university lecturer, Rosemary  aimed to inspire her students through interesting and innovative activities, such as collecting data from a local cemetery. She became particularly interested in the assessment of mathematics and statistics, and this became a theme in her research career. She continues this interest today as a consultant and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Tasmania, working on national projects with teachers and schools.
