Teaching ideas

Example question 1: “Can you make me six? Convince me!”

  • Response A: “I moved 5 red to the left on the top and 1 red to the left on the bottom. 5 and 1 more makes 6”
  • Response B: “I moved 3 red to the left on the top and 3 red to the left on the bottom. All together I moved 6 beads. Double 3 is 6”
  • Response C: “I moved 6 beads to the left on the top rail. 5 were red and 1 was white. Then I counted them 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6”

Example question 2: “Make me six, but with more on the top than the bottom”

  • Solution A: 5 on the top and 1 on the bottom. 6 = 5 + 1
  • Solution B: 4 on the top and 2 on the bottom. 6 = 4 + 2

Example question 3: “Make me six, but with 4 more on the top than the bottom”
