Books: teacher PL | ChinGUIDE

Year Level
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5

Description
Not all mathematical discussions are alike. It’s one thing to ask students to share how they solved a problem, to get ideas out on the table so that their thinking becomes visible; but knowing what to do with students’ ideas – where to go with them – can be a daunting task. Intentional Talk provides teachers with a framework for planning and facilitating purposeful mathematical discussions that enrich and deepen student learning. Intentional Talk provides the perfect bridge between student engagement and conceptual understanding in mathematical discussions.

What’s math got to do with it?: How teachers and parents can transform mathematics learning and inspire success (Jo Boaler, 2015)

Books: teacher PL | ChinGUIDE

Year Level
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, Year 7

Description
A critical read for teachers and parents who want to improve children’s mathematics learning, What’s Math Got to Do with It? is “an inspiring resource” (Publishers Weekly). This revised edition is updated with new research on the brain and mathematics that is revolutionising scientists’ understanding of learning and potential.

As always Jo Boaler presents research findings through practical ideas that can be used in classrooms and homes. The book shares Boaler’s work on ways to teach mathematics for a “growth mindset,” and includes a range of advice to inspire teachers and parents to give their students the best mathematical experience possible.

Equipment

Focus Area

Resource Type
Books: teacher PL | ChinGUIDE

Year Level
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, Year 7

Description

Banish math anxiety and give students of all ages a clear roadmap to success!

Mathematical Mindsets provides practical strategies and activities to help teachers and parents show all children, even those who are convinced that they are bad at math, that they can enjoy and succeed in math. Jo Boaler—Stanford researcher, professor of math education, and expert on math learning—has studied why students don’t like math and often fail in math classes. She’s followed thousands of students through middle and high schools to study how they learn and to find the most effective ways to unleash the math potential in all students.

There is a clear gap between what research has shown to work in teaching math and what happens in schools and at home. This book bridges that gap by turning research findings into practical activities and advice. Boaler translates Carol Dweck’s concept of ‘mindset’ into math teaching and parenting strategies, showing how students can go from self-doubt to strong self-confidence, which is so important to math learning. Boaler reveals the steps that must be taken by schools and parents to improve math education for all. Mathematical Mindsets:

  • Explains how the brain processes mathematics learning
  • Reveals how to turn mistakes and struggles into valuable learning experiences
  • Provides examples of rich mathematical activities to replace rote learning
  • Explains ways to give students a positive math mindset
  • Gives examples of how assessment and grading policies need to change to support real understanding

Mathematical Mindsets provides a proven, practical roadmap to mathematics success for any student at any age.

Seeley, a highly regarded author and experienced math educator, explains her approach while she skillfully accomplishes the following:

  • Challenges old ideas about teaching math
  • Offers a compelling rationale to focus on mathematical thinking and problem solving
  • Emphasizes the importance of a growth mindset about mathematical ability and achievement for students and teachers alike
  • Highlights the potential of professional learning communities as powerful tools for learning how to be more effective in helping students gain the mathematical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and habits of mind they need for living and working in the 21st century.

Mathematics K-6 Sample Units of Work (BOS NSW, 2003) | Anita’s must-have document

Equipment

Focus Area
Addition & Subtraction, Angles, Area, Chance, Data, Fractions & Decimals, Length, Mass, Multiplication & Division, Patterns & Algebra, Position, Three-Dimensional Space, Time, Two-Dimensional Space, Volume & Capacity, Whole Numbers

Resource Type
Books: tasks | ChinGUIDE, Syllabus support

Year Level
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6

Description
A brilliant collection of student-centred ‘tasks’ (not ‘units of work’) that were developed by to support the implementation of the Mathematics K-6 Syllabus (BOS NSW, 2002). The tasks are organised by Stages ie. Early Stage 1 (K), Stage 1 (Years 1-2), Stage 2 (Years 3-4), Stage 3 (Years 5-6).

This collection of learning experiences and assessment opportunities  allow students to develop and demonstrate evidence of the Working Mathematically processes (Questioning, Applying Strategies, Communicating, Reasoning, Reflecting) and are clearly labelled with a ‘WM’ icon.

TIP: In recent times when new curriculum documents are released, the mathematical content doesn’t drastically change. Rather, content is tweaked for students depth of understanding and teacher clarity. Obviously the labels (‘Outcomes’ in NSW, ‘Content Descriptions’ in the Australian Curriculum) we use to organise content change.

I highly recommend the continued use of this ‘must-have’ document to support high-quality teaching and learning of explicit maths concepts K–6, regardless of the curriculum you are using. For example:

  • new NSW Y3–6 Mathematics syllabus (NESA, 2023) mandatory for 2024
  • new NSW K–2 Mathematics Syllabus (NESA, 2021) mandatory for 2023
  • NSW Mathematics K–10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum: Volume 1 (BOS NSW, 2012). Mandatory 2013–2022
  • NSW Mathematics K–6 Syllabus (BOS NSW, 2002). Mandatory 2003–2012
  • Australian Curriculum Mathematics v9.0 (ACARA, 2022)
  • Australian Curriculum Mathematics v8.4 (ACARA, 2012).

Available from

  • Hard copy: As this is out of print, I recommend searching in the libraries of NSW Primary Schools!
  • digital copy (PDF, 156 pages): As this was freely available for download  for 10 years, I  recommend asking your school Maths Leader where it was saved on your teacher shared drive of electronic resources.

Books: teacher PL | ChinGUIDE

Year Level
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, Year 7

Description
“Oh no! Not fractions!” The anxiety that students (and teachers) experience with this core topic prompted the editors to bring together research on the teaching and learning of fractions.

There are 17 carefully selected articles covering the key mathematical concepts, common student misunderstandings and strategies to correct them, the value of making connections to other topics, and the use of technology to support learning. There are many useful references, plus some student activities and classroom resources. Whether it is teaching fractions through music or fairy tales, modelling proportional thinking or assessing students’ understanding of fractional equivalence, there is a wealth of information and inspiration.

The Bar Model Method is a key problem solving strategy consistently taught to primary school students in Singapore. It enables students to understand, visualise and represent conceptually complex problems and their solutions elegantly, and in doing so, further reinforces and builds students conceptual and procedural knowledge, making them more effective problem solvers.

I’ve had the privilege of seeing Vei Li present at the 2015 AAMT conference in Adelaide and from that moment on, I fell in love with the Bar Model Method!
