Tips for making your equipment classroom friendly

  • I store the 40 magnetic dots in a clear Decor Tellfresh 250 ml  container as shown in the photo. I use this container as it easily sits on the tray at the bottom of a teacher whiteboard at the front of the classroom.
  • I store the 4 ten frames on a magnetic hook placed on the side of a teacher’s whiteboard at the front of the classroom.

Tips for making your equipment classroom-friendly

  • How used: One student size number fan (single or double) per student. One teacher dem size per class.
  • How stored: Class set in a clear hinge-lid container.

Making this DIY resource

  1. Decide on the quantity you need of each type: A ‘Single Number Fan (14 pieces: one of each digit 1 to 9, three zero’s, c, $) only requires one copy of the BLM to be printed;  a ‘Double Number Fan’ (27 pieces: two of each digit 1 to 9, six zero’s, c, $, decimal point) requires two copies of the BLM to be printed.
  2. Photocopy Anita’s printable ‘Number Fans‘ onto a variety of bright coloured A4 paper (all the same colour for one fan)
  3. For each fan: (a) laminate the A4 page/s; (b) cut out each piece of the fan using a paper trimmer (eg. Officeworks $49.85 inc GST, 1/7/21) or scissors; (c) hole punch the bottom of each piece (d) assemble the 14 or 27 pieces of the fan with a split pin (eg. Officeworks, pack of 100, $4.95 inc GST, 1/7/21)

Tips for making your equipment classroom friendly

  • I have created these dice for use with an activity called ‘Nice and Easy’ (Fundamentals, Book 5 by ORIGO Education) for students to practise using the doubling and halving mental strategy for two-digit by two-digit multiplication, eg 45 x 16 = 90 x 8 = 720
  • To assist with differentiation, as some students may not know which is the ‘odd number’ to double and which is the ‘even number’ to halve, I have written the odd numbers on yellow cubes (15, 15, 25, 35, 45, 45) and the even numbers on green cubes (6, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18). I can then make the task low-floor by rewording my instruction to “Double the number on the yellow cube, halve the number on the yellow cube, then multiply your two new numbers”.
  • To store the cubes, I keep my full class set (17 of each colour as although this is a pair work activity, some students may need to work on their own) in a snap lock bag (16.5 x 15.5) cm.
  • I always label the storage bag with: the name of the task; the purpose of the task; how the dice are to be used (eg, pairs or individual); and where instructions for the activity can be found (ie the book reference).

Tips for making your equipment classroom-friendly

  • This is an A3 spiral wire bound Display Book with 20 fixed pockets in portrait orientation. I cut off each pocket/sheet (ie cut vertically with scissors next to the spine). As the white reinforced edge is 12 mm, after cutting there is still a 5 mm white reinforced edge.
  • These ultra-clear heavy weight pockets (60 microns) are perfect to use as student whiteboard insert sleeves (Remember to only use black student whiteboard marker pens and not coloured teacher marker pens!)
  • Alternatively, you can buy Sheet Protectors which are already separate sleeves. They are usually a heavier weight (80 microns).

Anita’s Board work

Differentiation in Years K-6 using one visual model for whole-class instruction.

  • In Kindy it’s a ‘TEN-FRAME’ and we use ‘Dot Dice’ for ‘how many more’ with addition problems (K: ACMNA004, MAe-5NA)
  •  Y1–2 I use ‘0–9 Numeral Dice’ to model addition with a focus on modelling and recording part-part-whole for addition (Y1: ACMNA015, MA1-5NA)
  • Y3–4 I use ‘0–9 Numeral Dice’ to model and apply the associative property to aid mental computation (Y3: ACMNA055, MA2-5NA)
  • Y4–5 it’s now a ‘ONE-FRAME’ with each small square representing 1 tenth. I use ‘Fraction Tenths Dice’ to model adding tenths (Y5: ACMNA103, MA3-7NA)
  • Y6 I use ‘Fraction Tenths Equivalent Dice’ to model adding fractions with related denominators, including mixed numerals. We also used equivalence to simplify answers. (Y6: ACMNA126, MA3-7NA)
