Transforming Classroom Practice in Maths K–6: Place Value
xxx
Course Description
A deep understanding of place value is essential to developing sound number sense, but it’s all too common for our students to simply see place value as just digits in columns without understanding the significance of groups of ten in the relationships between ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc and the extension of those relationships into tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.
In this whole-day workshop, Anita will guide your school’s teachers through the developmental continuum of place value concepts from small whole numbers in Kindergarten to large whole numbers to decimals in Grade 6. She will explain the best ways to support students to develop a deep understanding of place value with whole numbers and then to extend this understanding to decimals with ease.
Throughout the day, Anita will model how to embed place value language to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom.
Participants will engage in whole-class differentiated tasks using: visual models such as ten-frames and a range of hundreds charts, as well as concrete materials including bead racks, dice and place value arrows.
