Using a 5-part Lesson Structure to Maximise Student Learning Time
Is teaching maths really that different to teaching any other subject? We believe it is. So, what makes a high-quality maths lesson?
Course Description
In this course, Anita will focus on the three pillars of high-quality maths lessons K-6: tasks, tools and talk. She will explain her easy-to-implement 5-part lesson structure which incorporates these three pillars. Participants will experience hands-on tasks as ‘students’ while Anita demonstrates practical classroom strategies to support their implementation as the ‘teacher’, including how teachers can incorporate differentiation and make judgements about their students’ understanding along the way.
Learning Goals
By the end of the course, participants will:
- understand Anita’s 5-part lesson structure for maths K-6 and the typical timing of the 5 parts of the lesson across a week of teaching
- understand the different purposes of the lesson warm-up and Anita’s top five strategies for delivering lesson warm-ups
- have strategies to introduce new maths content using whole-class instruction, as well as strategies to lead the teacher-led practice and student-centred practice parts of maths lessons.
