Visual Models, Concrete Materials and Language in Maths: Fractions
Want to learn strategies to make differentiation easier when teaching fractions in any stage? This hands-on workshop is for you!
Course Description
Students need to develop sound visualistion and understanding of fractions as they progress through primary school. When teaching fractions, teachers need strong pedagogical content knowledge as well as easy-to-use strategies for the differentiation of fraction concepts.
In this hands-on workshop, Anita Chin will guide your staff through the developmental sequence of the ‘big ideas’ within fractions from Kindergarten to Year 8 using the NSW Mathematics K-6 Syllabus.
Working as a whole school group, participants will engage in range of classroom-ready, developmentally sequenced tasks for use in the classroom. Anita will use these tasks to demonstrate a variety of strategies for differentiation of fractions, including the use of language, concrete materials such as pattern blocks, and visual models such as ten-frames. Anita will also facilitate a discussion of available teacher resources, including books and equipment.

Delivery Model
This course is delivered as an after-school customised workshop at your school for your whole staff. It most often follows a day of demonstration lessons on the same concept, but it can also be delivered as a ‘stand-alone’ course. It is suitable for early career teachers, experienced teachers, learning support educators, maths leaders and school leaders.
You can choose either a 2-hour or 3-hour course. If you choose the 3-hour course, teachers will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the developmental sequence of content from Kindergarten to Year 6. The 3-hour course also allows time for teachers to work in small teams to reflect on their current practice and begin to determine areas of change moving forward.
