Visual Models, Concrete Materials and Language in Maths: Fractions

Want to learn strategies for whole-class differentiated instruction that can be used across your whole school? Then this hands-on workshop is for you!
Course Description

In this course, Anita will demonstrate how to differentiate whole-class instruction for fractions using the NSW Mathematics K-6 Syllabus. She will show and explain teaching strategies that include using visual models, rich mathematical language, and open-ended questioning techniques. Teachers will engage in a variety of classroom-ready tasks about fractions, including the use of pattern blocks and ten-frames. Throughout the course, Anita will also offer practical advice on how to implement a consistent whole-school approach to mathematics.

Delivery Model

This course is delivered as an after-school customised workshop at your school for your whole staff. It most often follows a day of demonstration lessons on the same concept, but it can also be delivered as a ‘stand-alone’ course. It is suitable for early career teachers, experienced teachers, learning support educators, maths leaders and school leaders.

You can choose either a 2-hour or 3-hour course. If you choose the 3-hour course, teachers will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the developmental sequence of content from Kindergarten to Year 6. Working in small teams, teachers will then reflect on their current practice and begin to determine areas of change moving forward.
