Concrete Materials and Language in Maths: Number Concepts
Got concrete materials but unsure how best to use them to support student understanding and engagement in maths? Learn efficient strategies from Anita.
Course Description
Using concrete materials is a great way to improve student engagement and understanding in maths. But using concrete materials effectively and efficiently takes organisation and practice. To make it easier to use concrete materials from Kindergarten to Year 6, Anita’s approach is ‘one piece of equipment, whole school’ (with just a few exceptions).
In this course, Anita will model a range of classroom-ready tasks K–6 using a selection of concrete materials nominated by your school. She will model how easy it can be to differentiate each task by varying the target concrete material and using mathematical language. She will also provide tips and tricks for the efficient management of each concrete material in the classroom.

Delivery Model
This course is delivered as an after-school customised workshop at your school for your whole staff. It is suitable for early career teachers, experienced teachers, learning support educators, maths leaders and school leaders.
Anita will discuss which concrete materials will be presented with the course organiser prior to the workshop.
You can choose either a 2-hour or 3-hour course. If you choose the 3-hour course, Anita will offer practical advice on how to kick-start a consistent whole-school approach to using concrete materials and language in mathematics. This will involve teams reflecting on current practice and agreeing to what they will implement within a negotiated timeframe.
