Whole-day staff workshop (5 hours)

Appropriate phase of learning journey with Anita:      START   |   MIDDLE   |   END

This professional learning day is designed to empower all educators K-6 with pedagogical content knowledge by engaging with the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum to see how the ‘big ideas’ of mathematics develop K-6 and how concepts connect both within and across substrands.

Course Description

Educators work collaboratively in small Professional Learning Teams within the one learning space, with Anita facilitating a whole-school approach model of professional learning. The course can also be delivered to just a small team of leaders consisting of your school’s Mathematics team members and other school leaders.

Step 1 – Examine the organisation of the developmentally sequenced content within the syllabus, showing:

  • Big ideas organised according to the Australian Curriculum content descriptors
  • Knowledge and skills, ie the ‘what’
  • Working mathematically components, ie the ‘how’
  • Mental computation strategies and other key features, such as the diagrams and language.

Step 2 – Analyse the content to determine the number of weeks each substrand requires.

Step 3 – Consider what content will be delivered from one substrand over a week of teaching.

Step 4 – Position content in grade-based scope and sequences by identifying prior knowledge needed
and considering day-to-day events occurring within the school year.
