The art of teaching mathematics for a conceptual understanding is a complex task. It requires educators to understand it’s logical structure and have deep content knowledge. Furthermore, if we are to create students who are curious about mathematics, regardless of their ability, we require innovative teaching strategies and tools to engage all learners.
This hands-on and practical workshop presented by Anita Chin focuses on three core elements for delivering a high-quality mathematics lesson as an early career teacher:
- organising your learning space with accessible resources, stacked and packed in classroom friendly ways
- using hands-on materials for whole class instruction K-6
- practical ideas for whole class differentiated learning tasks.
Participants will engage with classroom-ready tasks and watch Anita ‘walk the floor’ as she models strategies for:
- strategically handing out, collecting, and managing resources including dice and playing cards
- effectively using and managing student whiteboard insert sleeves.
Black line masters and links to resources provided.
Schools are encouraged to include a Mathematics leader and/or mentor with their team of early career teachers to facilitate productive dialogue during the workshop that is relevant to teachers’ classroom context and school culture.
