Course Description

Do you know who your high potential learners are in the classroom? Do you know how to identify your high potential learners? Do you have students that not sufficiently challenged? By inspiring our students who are passionate about maths with challenging learning experiences can spark their desire to show you what they can do with what they know.

The presenter, Anita Chin will show you how to provide opportunities to unleash your student’s potential in Years 3 to 6 by differentiating your whole-class instruction using open-ended questions. Secondly, and more important, creating and using high-ceiling tasks that connect concepts allows students to go deeper in their thinking. But what does deep thinking look like? Are you confident with identifying this?

This hands-on workshop will empower educators to plan and implement powerful practices, which will increase the learning outcomes for high potential learners. This will be achieved by learning how to:

  • go deeper by explicitly connecting concepts for students, both within and across substrands
  • craft asking good open-ended questions
  • create robust tasks that are developmentally sequenced.

Participants will engage with tasks to uncover the characteristics of a high-potential learner. These tasks will include the use of the following ‘ingredients’ needed for whole-class differentiated instruction:

  • concrete materials
  • rich mathematical language
  • visual models
  • written recordings.

Blackline masters and an e-folder of resources provided.

Completing ChinUP Y3-6: Tasks to Challenge High Potential Learners will contribute 2 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 2.5.2 and 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
