ChinUP after-school workshops are hosted by primary schools across NSW and are open to all schools in the local area. These two-hour workshops are for school teams of up to 8 educators, and any school in any sector is welcome. Individuals and casual teachers are also very welcome to attend.

Presented by Anita Chin
Audience: Early career teachers, experienced teachers, mathematics/numeracy leaders.
Course code: UAAT0210
NESA PD Hours: 2 hours
Cost: $160 (incl GST) per person

Course Description

Additive thinking is more than just knowing mental computation strategies for addition and subtraction. It involves manipulating numbers in meaningful ways and communicating mathematical reasoning. Students need to be confident, creative and flexible additive thinkers so that they can become multiplicative thinkers.

In this hands-on workshop, Anita Chin will immerse participants in a range of classroom-ready activities that support students to become fluent additive thinkers who can explain their reasoning using a variety of representations and language. Participants will experience innovative ways to engage students K-6 to work mathematically with addition and subtraction using:

  • double-nine dot dominoes
  • the empty number line.

Anita will model how teachers and their students can ‘show their working’ in written form for each activity, using her mantra: Make it, say it, draw it, write it! Blackline masters and an e-folder of resources provided.

What to bring
  • a hard copy of the NSW Mathematics K-6 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum (the ‘orange book’)
  • post-it notes
  • yellow highlighter
  • your 6-digit NESA number.

Completing ChinUP K-6: Taking a Deep Dive into Additive Thinking will contribute 2 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 2.5.2 and 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
